Sirius Shipping returns to China for new tanker series

Sweden’s Sirius Shipping has gone back to China for more tanker newbuilds in its latest fleet renewal move.
The Donsö-based owner has signed for four 7,999 dwt product and chemical carriers at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (CMJL), Dingheng, for delivery expected in 2027 and 2028.
No price has been revealed for the order, which follows last year’s 15,000 dwt newbuilds booked at CMJL Yangzhou, with the first delivery set for 2026.
Sirius said the latest series of Ice Class 1A units, developed in cooperation with FKAB, are an update from the 7,999 dwt tankers Saturnus and Mercurius the company ordered at China’s Avic Dingheng yard in 2016 before China Merchants’ takeover.
“These vessels are an important step towards our vision—to become the long-term first choice for our colleagues, customers, and society. The vessels will of course be built to Sirius standard and incorporate the latest technology for future compliance,” chief executive Jonas Backman said.
The 120-m-long newbuilds will sport a hybrid battery and shore connection and have an estimated EEDI 40% below the 2025 Phase III requirements.
